Embossed Leaves Reversible Shawl
Join the fun of creating this knit-look Embossed Leaves Reversible Shawl with two distinctive looks where on one side the design features offset textured leaves textured leaves and the other shows a knit-look relief pattern.

I originally designed this shawl to host at CAL event and I could not be happier with the amazing feedback and beautiful projects participants were posting on social media on a daily basis. That is the best feeling I experience as a designer: when you see that other crocheters are actually enjoying the pattern, executing it at ease and sharing pictures of their finished projects on social media.
This is one of the shawls, made by one of the CAL participants, Sharon Tedford (she is one of the “The Flash” makers of the Bonita Patterns CALs group). Her project pictures made the our group jaw drop (I just simply fainted for a few minutes after I saw it).

It is hard to believe the serendipitous result created on the back! Just like penicillin, I take zero credit for how the back of the shawl created an equally interesting and textured pattern, making it a two in one shawl. Sharon took a great picture showing the texture on the backside.

I think one of the key elements that made this shawl a hit, other than the Embossed Crochet technique was the choice of yarn, my own brand, Bonita Yarns Dream Swirl  (Advertising disclaimer: it is from my Bonita Patterns & Yarns shop sales  and affiliate ads that we sponsor the free content on the Bonita Patterns Blog and CALs support on our FB group). Although it might seem biased that I’m a yarn retailer, I am first and foremost, a designer. I offer yarn collections that meet my design needs (weight, fiber, dyeing, colors, etc.), while most yarn brands hire designers that will design a pattern to fit the needs of the yarn brand and collections they need to promote.
For instance, I had an idea for the Embossed Leaves Boho Vest (picture below) and as lover of self-striping yarns, I tried my first sample with every possibility of self-striping yarn I had in stock. A dozen trials later… none of them passed my designing criteria. They either didn’t have a long enough color transition that would compliment a larger Embossed Crochet design, or didn’t have the right fiber content for the light airy “boho” drape, or a combination of both. I had to launch an entire new collection of yarn that would complement the design, invest on manufacturing, promoting, and take a big risk that would all work out. Whew! Luckily it did! Both the vest and the shawl were great hits!
Taking this opportunity, addressing the overwhelming inquiries and requests we received about the patterns featured in past CALs… the next in line (soon, real soon!) will be the Embossed Leaves Boho Vest. We will keep you posted by email and on the Bonita Patterns Facebook Group. If you want to get the news, join our mailing list HERE and our FB group HERE.
Now, let’s crochet our two-in-one project!

Pattern Notes:

  1. The beauty of knitted cable leaves has been “translated” to crochet in this Embossed Leaves Reversible Shawl. The shawl has two distinctive looks where on one side the design features offset textured leaves textured leaves and the other shows a knit-look relief pattern.
  2. The shawl is worked from the top down and increases at row ends and stitches near center line. Shawl is divided by a center “spine” or middle stitches’ where first section crocheted before spine is repeated or mirrored after spine.

Instructions: Using a magic adjustable ring, or Ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. You can find a video tutorial for the magic ring HERE.
