Crocodile Stitch Convertible Mittens CAL – Part Two

CAL, Cals, crochet pattern, Free Patterns, Uncategorized / Friday, December 1st, 2017

The Crocodile Stitch Convertible Mittens CAL have been a big hit in our Crochet Along Facebook Group! After posting the first part last week, I watched with glee as members began posting such beautiful project pictures. I never get tired of seeing you projects from my patterns on social media…In fact, if you hashtag your projects with #BonitaPatternsCAL, #CrocodileStitch or #BonitaPatterns, that helps me find them when I’m “hawking” to see what you are doing with my patterns. 😀

Quite often, your project pictures motivate and inspire me right back! For instance, this week our member Nathalie Martin Darmon, from France, reminded me that my Bonita Yarns Merino Dream collection works beautifully for these mittens. The Kaleidoscopic Collection yarn I used is sock weight, while the Merino Dream is Sport weight (just a tad thicker). However, depending on fiber content and how the yarn is plied, slight differences in weight such as from fingering or sock (1) to sport (2) shouldn’t visibly compromise gauge much. Plus, I’m sure Nathalie checked her gauge swatch and figured it was going to work; that’s what I do too.

I know, enough talking, Lianka… LET’s CROCHET!

In part one of the CAL we worked on the cuff and part of the hand section, just up to below the thumb. Today we’ll start by creating the thumbhole, finishing the remaining hand section. Next we will crochet the mitten top separately and join it to body of glove during finishing, creating mittens that can convert into fingerless mittens.

Rnd 25 (thumb hole): FPdc in next 18 (21) FPdc, ch 6, skip next 6 FPdc, FPdc in next FPdc and in each FPdc around. – (36 FPdc + 6 ch = 42 [42 FPdc + 6 ch = 48] sts)

Rnd 26: FPdc in next 18 (21) FPdc, dc in each of 6 ch, FPdc in next FPdc and in each FPdc around. – (36 FPdc + 6 dc = 42 [42 FPdc + 6 dc = 48] sts)

Rnd 27 – Rnd 28: FPdc in first FPdc and in each st around. – (42 [48] FPdc)

Small/Medium Sizes Only:

Rnd 29 – Rnd 34: FPdc in next st and in each st around; at the end of Rnd 34 only, join with sl st in top of first FPdc. Fasten off. – (42 [48] FPdc)

Large/Extra Large Sizes Only:

Rnd 29 – Rnd 36: FPdc in next st and in each st around; at the end of Rnd 36 only, join with sl st in top of first FPdc. Fasten off. – (42 [48] FPdc)

Directions for Thumb (All sizes)

Rnd 1: Join yarn to centermost st of thumb hole on Rnd 26 (see side picture), ch 3 (doesn’t count as dc), dc 16 evenly around. – (16 [16] dc)

Rnd 2 – Rnd 9: FPdc in next st and in each st around. – (16 [16] FPdc)

Rnd 10 (decrease): FPdc2tog in each st around. – (8 [8] FPdc)

Rnd 11 (decrease): FPdc2tog in each st around; join with sl st in top of first FPdc. Fasten off leaving 6” tail for sewing. Weave 6” tail through last four stiches closing the opening. – (4 [4] FPdc)

Directions for Mitten Tops

Ch 3 (3), join with sl st in first ch to form a ring or use a magic adjustable ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as sc), 6 sc in ring. – (6 [6] sc).

Rnd 2: 2 dc in each sc. – (12 [12] dc).

Rnd 3: FPdc in next dc, 2 FPdc in next dc, rep from * around. – (18 [18] FPdc).

Rnd 8: FPdc in next 6 FPdc, 2 FPdc in next dc, rep from * around. – (48 FPdc).

Rnd 9 – Rnd 18: FPdc in each FPdc around, at the end of Rnd 18 only, join with sl st in top of first dc. Fasten off – (48 FPdc).

Finishing:

Sewing mitten top to body of glove:

Turn both mitten top and fingerless glove right side out, so Crocodile Stitch cuff and ribbed fingerless glove are showing (see pics above).

Line up first st of Rnd 16 (18) of mitten top with first st of Rnd 28 (30) of glove. One thumb will face left and one will face right. Using tapestry needle and whipstitch, sew through front loop sts of mitten top to back loop sts of glove across 21 (24) sts. Sewing this way will create a more polished ribbed seam. However, there are no rules to join the top section. You may join it as you wish: through both loops or even with a crochet hook and sl st. Sew button on center of Rnd 12, opposite button loop (see pic below). Fasten off, weave in all ends.

I hope you enjoyed our Crocodile Stitch Convertible Mittens CAL and keep checking our blog for more fun and unique designs. We’ve only just began…
